About Stikine River Provincial Park

Stikine River Provincial Park is located in northwestern British Columbia, encompassing a rugged stretch of the Stikine River known as one of Canada's most spectacular wild river corridors. The park protects over 35 kilometers of the river's deep canyon, carved through massive volcanic basalt and limestone formations. The geography of the park includes towering cliffs, narrow gorges, and a remote river valley surrounded by dense boreal and subalpine forests teeming with wildlife. The area is home to species such as mountain goats, grizzly bears, eagles, and several salmon species that migrate through the river. The park's history is closely linked to First Nations, who have inhabited the region for thousands of years, relying on the Stikine River for transportation, food, and cultural purposes. Visitors come mainly for river rafting and kayaking through the challenging whitewater canyon, as well as fishing and wildlife photography. Hiking opportunities are limited and typically focus on river access points or along the riverbanks, as the terrain is steep and remote. The park offers a rare glimpse into truly wild landscapes, accessible primarily by boat or challenging overland routes. Adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts find it a rewarding destination for multi-day river expeditions. The park helps preserve the ecological integrity of the Stikine River watershed and showcases some of British Columbia’s last untouched river landscapes, providing essential habitat and maintaining the natural processes of this dramatic river system.
